The North Lodge — Balcarres Estate, Fife

Designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and built in 1897 as the gatehouse to the north drive of Balcarres Estate, the North Lodge sits at the edge of ancient woodland in the East Neuk of Fife. Lion-topped pillars mark the entrance; inside, the baronial scale gives way to something more intimate — two floors, a log-burning stove, a regally proportioned bedroom.

The old turret, tucked into the upper floor, houses a Witt & Berg 1500mm Antique Copper Nickel bathtub. It is a room that could only be this room: curved walls, the stillness of the surrounding pines, and a bath whose warm metallic finish sits entirely at ease with Lorimer's architecture.
